Nothing hurts quite like the self-inflicted pain of your own selfishness. What makes this worse is that you’re largely unaware of it until you notice the difference after you have overcome the selfishness that was causing or enhancing your pain. Once you reach that point, you receive a peace that comes from knowing almost nothing can hurt you, that you will be able to bear almost anything as long as it lacks any element of your own selfishness mixed in.
Our selfishness is so sneaky and pernicious. We must continually strive to cast it off, sort of like plucking out one’s eye or cutting off one’s hand. That sounds like self-inflicted pain, but in actuality it is the only remedy!
